Under the supervision of the Director of Finance, the Coordinator of Finance provides oversight to the department’s budget and grants team.
The Coordinator assists the Director of Finance with the preparation, maintenance, and control of the School Division’s annual budget.
The Coordinator analyzes and prepares accurate financial data and reports for surveys, requests for financial information, WPS administration, School Board members, and the Virginia Department of Education.
Essential Functions/Tasks: Assists with the preparation of the WPS budget in final form, and makes projections of expenditures, revenues, and balances.
Constructs salary scales, and stipend scales and calculates the cost of fringe benefits each year.
Develops various financial studies and reports for the Superintendent and the School Board on request.
Responsible for coordinating the independent, external audits of all School Board accounts, as well as the school activity accounts.
Identification and processing of required budget amendments during the year that prevents the School Board from over-expending the legal appropriations.
Provides assistance to school treasurers and secretaries in matters of purchasing, petty cash and activity funds.
Assist with tracking capital assets over $5,000 and maintains records for auditing.
Approves all purchase orders for the availability of funds and correct coding.
Arranges for audits of the School Board and schools’ activity-fund accounts.
Oversees the maintenance of scholarship accounts, pays certain scholarships and invests excess funds.
Assist with the monthly and year-of-end closing of the School Board accounts.
Assists in training employees in the use of the financial software systems.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Finance.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Provides supervision of finance department staff under the guidance of the Director of Finance.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must possess a combination of experience, education and training demonstrating ability to effectively perform essential job functions and demonstrating a thorough knowledge of accounting principles and budget preparation and maintenance, including computer applications for financial operations.
Must demonstrate leadership and supervisory abilities.
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, interpret, develop and implement policies, financial reports, and legal documents.
Ability to respond to inquiries from employees and community members.
Ability to gather data and write reports, analyzing specific issues and outlining corrective measures.
Ability to effectively present information to management staff.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts of accounting and budget management.
Ability to calculate interest and percentages.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
Ability to deal with standardized situations with some variables.
Ability to read and interpret policies.
Qualifications, Education and Experience: A master’s degree in accounting or a related field with progressively responsible experience in the areas of accounting, budget preparation, and maintenance, preferably in the public setting.

Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.
Regular contact with city/school employees is required.

Salary: Range based on the 2023-2024 Coordinator Salary Scale is $96,022 - $157.
435 per year.
