Job Summary
The Network Engineer is responsible for contributing to network planning, GIS Mapping and Analytics, and engineering projects in support of Shentel’s network infrastructure.
These projects will include telephony, data, access and optical transport infrastructure, as well as, planning, mapping, engineering, geospatial analytics, data manipulation, testing and implementing support for new network technology deployments.
The Network Engineer will also be responsible for generating detailed engineering documentation and maps to support the installation, configuration and ongoing support of all new network deployments and upgrades in addition to reporting and data analytics.
Qualification Requirements:
a.
Education: BS degree in a relevant engineering or technology field is preferred.
Other candidates with a strong technical background and substantial industry or military experience will be considered.
b.
Experience Level:
i.
5 or more years of experience in the telecommunications industry is required
ii.
3 or more years of headend design, outside plant design, fiber optic network design, and/or GIS field of specialties
c.
Special Requirements:
i.
CCNA, CCNP, or similar certifications preferred, but not required
ii.
GIS experience in Alteryx, ESRI, ArcGIS, FME, Mapcom, 3GIS,etc
iii.
Ability to manipulate data, import/export, convert files and maps etc
iv.
Ability to create robust map designs with heavy details for presentational purposes and to support other groups
v.
Optical and IP network design with hands-on experience designing and deploying networks in a service provider or large enterprise environment
vi.
Project management experience

Knowledge:

GIS/Geospatial Tools and Program Experience for robust Data Manipulation and Presentational purposes.

Fiber Networks (outside plant, network equipment, CPE)
c.
Access networks (FTTH, DSL, DOCSIS, Metro Ethernet)
d.
Transport technologies (Ethernet, optical networking, IP routing/networking)
e.
Routing & Switching (MPLS, VPN’s, layer 2/3 QOS, VLAN, ISIS, BGP, and HSRP)
f.
Voice network technologies and protocols (traditional telephone and VoIP)
g.
Head End network technologies (HE optics, nodes, actives, passives, STB’s, digital headend equipment, etc.
)
