Position Summary:
The Certified Nursing Assistant is a member of the interdisciplinary team who works under the supervision of a registered nurse and performs various services for a patient as necessary to meet the patient’s personal needs and to promote comfort.
The Certified Nursing Assistant is responsible for observing the patient, reporting these observations to the RN and documenting observations to the RN and documenting care.
Essential Job Functions:
Gives personal care including baths, back rubs, oral hygiene, shampoos and changing bed linen as often as assigned.
Assists in dressing and undressing patients as assigned.
Assists in feeding patient as assigned.
Takes and records oral, rectal, and axillary temperatures, pulse respiration, and blood pressure when ordered with appropriate completed/demonstrated skills competency.
Provides proper care and observation of patient’s skin to prevent breakdown of tissue over bony prominence.
Reports on patients’ condition and significant changes to Registered Nurse.
Assists in ambulation and exercise as assigned by a Registered Nurse.
Offers and assists with bedpans and urinals.
Helps with light laundry needs.
Keeps patients living area clean and orderly, as assigned.
Adheres to the organization’s documentation and care procedures and standards of personal and professional conduct.
Participates in personal, professional growth and development.
Also participates in quality assessment performance improvement and attend IDT meetings.
Respectful of patient and family/caregiver environment and patients’ personal needs.
Performs personal care needs after given a patient’s assignment and attending to his/her requests promptly.
If unable to perform a certain task, report to the Registered Nurse.
Meets safety needs of patient and using equipment safely and properly (foot stools, side rails, O2 etc.
)
Respects confidentiality and privacy of all patients, caregivers, and fellow team members.
Communicates in a respectful and courteous manner.
Minimizes non -productive time and fills any periods of low census and/or slow periods with activities and cross-training that will enable you to meet the future needs of the organization.
Licensed driver with automobile that is insured in accordance with organization requirements and is in good working order.
Must be willing to travel the entire service area.
Other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience:
Currently licensed in VA as a Certified Nursing Assistant
Self-directed with the ability to work with little direct supervision.
Is secure with issues of death/dying.
Provides a calm manner when in a patient’s home.
Has empathy for the needs of the ill, injured, frail and the impaired.
Possesses and maintains current CPR certification.
Demonstrates tact, patience and good personal hygiene.
Sensory/Cognitive Requirements: The requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Must be able to continuously stand and walk, frequently squat, climb stairs, bend to the floor, reach over the shoulder, kneel, twist, sit, lift patients, and remain in uncomfortable positions for prolonged periods of time.
Must have visual acuity enough to continuously note changes in patient condition (breathing, color, and skin integrity) and to read a thermometer, sphygmomanometer dial, and other instruments.
Must have hearing acuity enough to auscultate BP, hear verbal instructions and communication from clients, respond to emergency alarms, and answer the telephone.
Ability to read and follow written instructions and document care given at the bedside.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
