SUMMARY STATEMENT
The Upward Bound Coach will work approximately 200 hours per contract with Upward Bound students.
They will provide direct support to Upward Bound students, with academic planning, career planning, and tutoring at Washington County Public Schools (WCPS).
Upward Bound Coaches will also be involved with supervising Saturday sessions and field trips throughout the academic school year as well as recruiting new students into the program.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
The Upward Bound Coach reports to the Upward Bound Manager and coordinates most closely with the Upward Bound Advising and Assessment Specialist and WCPS staff.
This position may also involve supervision of tutors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The Upward Bound Coach will complete the following tasks:
1.
Assist with the recruitment of new UB students for the upcoming academic year and during the academic year when vacancies occur.
2.
Actively reviewing grades with students individually via StudentVue on a weekly or monthly basis to discuss progress.
Make email contacts with the teachers of failing students (at least once per marking period) and parents (at least once per semester) about how to address the student’s academic progress and make any improvements necessary for school success.
3.
Responsible for documenting student conversations/meetings about future plans, goals, etc.

4.
The UB Coach will supervise after-school tutoring sessions for one hour twice per week.
Assist in scheduling additional tutors during weekly tutoring sessions at WCPS and ensure that attendance sheets are accurate and complete.
During tutoring coaches will actively engage with students, mentoring them regarding secondary program of studies, future college plans or providing them with alternate college preparatory assignments when they have no homework.
5.
Assist with all ten UB Saturday Sessions throughout the academic year.
6.
Assist students with completion of UB Saturday session materials and surveys of program activities, and return to the UB Manager.
7.
Work closely with the UB Manager and Advising/Assessment Specialist, reporting to them about student needs and progress; meeting periodically to discuss student progress and program activities.
8.
Assist with the supervision and chaperoning a minimum of 80% of the field trips and UB activities.
9.
Participate twice annually (fall and spring) in TRiO Upward Bound staff development.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Secondary Teacher Certification and bachelor’s degree required; will be a WCPS teacher working at South Hagerstown High School.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Excellent interpersonal and verbal skills; proficiency in computer applications; ability to work independently and accurately; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with students and others of diverse backgrounds.
WCPS has agreed to allow this part-time grant-funded position to access WCPS data systems for purposes of the Upward Bound project.
Will meet frequently with the Coordinator and/or the Advising and Assessment Specialist to discuss student progress.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Predominantly classroom environment with the potential for student interruptions.
Additional environments may include office environments, campus/school events, or field trips.
Minimal lifting is required for this position.
